Route 66 Cycleway and William Deighton Memorial, Brearley

The route 66 cycleway passes through the small hamlet of Brearley between Luddendenfoot and Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire. Before crossing over the railway you pass the memorial stone pictured, the stone is there to commemorate tax official William Deighton who was murdered by the notorious Cragg Vale Coiners Gang led by "King" David Hartley. I have no idea who placed the stone there or why this spot was chosen the gang being centred around Cragg Vale and the murder taking place in Halifax.
