Calvert Mill Orphans Grave at Luddenden Dene Wesleyan Chapel
10 Views
29th October 2024
Taken in August 2022, the picture shows the grounds of Luddenden Dene Wesleyan Chapel. The chapel opened in 1828 and remained in use until fire destroyed the building in 1954. Services were then held in the nearby Sunday School until the late 1970's, when the congregation had reduced to single figures and it was closed.
The grave shown is 183 and was purchased by Calvert's Mill in nearby Wainstalls in 1876, it is a communal grave for the orphans who died whilst working there. They also purchased grave 184 in March 1889 as another communal grave for the orphans, this tomb is unmarked.
