Stone Engraving at Luddenden Stone Horse Trough

The inscription reads 1861 Wm Patchett Surveyor. Patchett dies in the year the plaque was inscribed and he was a local carpenter and undertaker in the Luddenden area.
Built in a time before motor vehicles, stone horse troughs were put around the districts of many towns and villages for horses, dogs and in some instances cattle. Most have now been removed or like in the case of the one at the bottom of Stocks Lane, Luddenden been left to nature to reclaim the water storage area. www.colingreenphotography.co.uk
